My Favorite People

My favorite people on social media. Where do I begin?

They post pictures of themselves on vacation in Mexico. They post pictures of themselves in their backyard swimming pools. They post pictures of themselves in their large, well decorated, nicely furnished homes.

They clearly have plenty of disposable income. They definitely live well above the poverty line. They aren’t trying desperately to make ends meet.

They drive cars they don’t need. Have more bedrooms than they can fill. They eat more in a day than some people eat in a week.

These are the people that push for social justice. They push for free health care. They push for more social programs.

They have never served in the military, the government, or taught our children in public schools. They have never served in a police department, served as a firefighter, worked in a hospital. They have never served the nation that has protected them as they speak so poorly about it, insult it, and deny it.

They cry out for socialism and decry capitalism from their leather couches, holding their $1000 smartphone while watching their sixty-two inch flat screen with a Tesla in the garage next to a BMW.

They happily give away the rights of others only to protect their own. They claim to be apolitical but vote straight party line on one side or the other.

They want to clean out your savings while saving their own, hiding behind tax lawyers and business loopholes.

They push for legalization of more and more illicit drugs and defunding the police as they sit in their suburban homes simultaneously crying about the violence in the inner cities where drug use is rampant and making the situation worse.

They want free immigration but have never been to the border to see what that looks like. The harm it causes. The frustration and disenchantment it breeds with immigrants who are trying to follow the rules.

They want you to follow the science, as long as it is their science and it follows their agenda, but they want you to ignore it when it doesn’t.

My favorite people on social media are the obtuse. The hypocritical. The self-involved.

They entertain me. I shake my head.

They will be the first ones who will accuse me of being those very same things, not realizing I am talking about them.

Those are my favorite people.
