Welcome to Environmentalist Island!
For four years, and even the years since, there has been massive pushback against the “America First” Agenda by President Trump. Those who opposed it continually said we were putting ourselves on an island, we were becoming isolationists, and it wasn’t good for the global community. I would tell you there is some truth in there.
Arguably, the environmentalist movement in the United States being led by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, her squad, and tens of thousands of activists are doing more to isolate the United States than President Trump could have done in two consecutive terms. Maybe even three or four.
Right now, the US is losing influence around the globe. While there is a myriad of reasons, I believe the overly myopic view of the various environmentalist cults out there (yes, I said cults) is doing much more damage than good to even their own cause of saving Mother Earth. The Green New Deal and the Paris Accords are just two examples of how we are leading ourselves onto an island. Many of them would have happily sacrificed America to save the planet. They are destroying both. Let me explain.
Not that long ago, the United States had the ability to SLOWLY influence how other nations viewed climate change concerns like litter, fossil fuels, air and water pollution, endangered species, whaling, and whatever other negative environmental factor you can think of. Why was it important to do it slowly? Because the rest of the world doesn’t move at the pace of the United States, they don’t have our economy, and they don’t have the social awareness we have here.
In typical American fashion, we decided we were going to make decisions for the rest of the world. We knew best and they were going to do what we wanted. And they were going to do it on our timeline. And that was so our politicians could placate some loud and obnoxious climate activists instead of evaluating the impact of what we were asking the rest world to do BEYOND just the environment. Thus, the Green New Deal and being a driving force behind the Paris Accords.
Except the rest of the world doesn’t need to listen to us. In their minds they don’t need to change anything. And we don’t have any leverage to make them do it. Why? Because it doesn’t benefit them. They gain nothing by it. In many cases, we would be making their lives more difficult and destroying their economies and while offering them NOTHING in return.
By the way, OPEC isn’t stupid. Even with the reversal (and horrible business deal) by President Biden to start buying their oil again, they can see we are forcing the move to EVs. They know we are trying to end the use of fossil fuels. Why in the world would they give a shit what we say when, in the near future, we will no longer have a positive impact on their economy? Who is sweeping in behind us and making friends with OPEC? China. Russia. India. That’s about 60% of the global population, BTW.
And exactly where do you think all that lithium comes from for those EV batteries? Africa. Who owns most of Africa? China. Did we think through that before we started pushing EVs? No. Why? Because Greta von Whats-her-name and the rest of the cult demanded it. What happens when we can’t get affordable lithium out of Africa? We go back to fossil fuels and then OPEC completely has us by the balls, unless we start fracking here again. Wait. Environmentalists don’t like fracking. So, that’s out. Now what?
So, OPEC and east Asia and Africa are all giving us the finger. “Fuck you America. You offer us nothing and destroy our economies and force us to do things before we are ready. China doesn’t do that. Russia doesn’t do that. We like them better than you. So, we aren’t listening to you anymore.”
Now we are rapidly losing our influence to PROTECT the planet and fight climate change around the globe. The slow progress we WERE making has stopped. Out of spite, it may even start regressing. The nations we NEEDED to influence now have new daddies. Why? Because environmentalists and climate activists aren’t politicians, and they don’t understand connecting the dots between economics and influence to get what you want. And our politicians are fucking weak and won’t tell a 14-year-old to shut up and sit in a corner like she should.
Our island is slowly floating away. BTW, if you missed my last blog, that island is in the third world.
